Just had to pop in years later and say that the idea of having chime in one's soul is vital. I never would have had a hole punched into my nose or anywhere else unless there was a deep spiritual or emotional context to it, and indeed, the little Greek chorus in my head woke up one day last month and said "I need a septum piercing!" Interesting choice for a first piercing. Took a confusing couple weeks of soul searching to realize it was to honor my late husband of sixteen years as he wore a spike when we first met. Jumped in with both feet, starting with a #8 ring about three weeks ago, and the spike is on order, hopefully arriving by the time the wound has healed enough to handle the change.

oh dang, that's hardcore. i have to get mine punched to a 4 because of how small my soft spot is. i can't imagine going that big though. even going from 16-14 when i had my initial piercing was crazy painful once my cartilage started denting.

I didn't get it "punched" at all. This is plain old hardcore stretched from a 14g. Nowadays I make my own jewelry, but a padlock will suffice in scaring the masses indefinately =) That said its a spiritual trophy from a shaman right of passage into manhood. It had to be something no man I knew of had done. And to this day, it still is. It will never close up either, weeks and even months go by without jewelry (I have a day job lol) and it stays its same old "I can see you from the other side effect." Thank you for the compliment sir.

oh, i wasn't saying that i thought you got yours punched. i'm just saying that denting my cartilage is crazy painful and i'm going straight to a 4, and my goal size is 7/16. haha.

To fair a warning some septums won't fit that big, and the jewelry will be heavy, block airways, etc. Mine is a 00 and I cannot breathe through my nostrils at all with jewelry in. Besides it's not the size that counts it's how you use it. ;)

Eh I got it at a 14guage relatively small. Its like bumping your nose real hard is all, and the sensitivity afterwards is bothersome, but once it heals its like an earring.

Nope believe it or not i breathe fine with it in, there is room behind the ring that is not visible from the photos perspective. =)

That's so cool. It looks like it would be painful pressing against the cartillage though. I just got my septum pierced at a 16g about a month ago, and I got bored and put a 14g in it last night, and it felt really wierd, even being that small.
(Oh, and needless to say, my mom caught me with it in this morning and made me switch back to a 16g.)

Regardless of the situation keep the size YOU feel comfortable with, so the way I figure it mom shouldn't care what size it is (unless its my size lol) least of all one guage size (not much of a difference really) so I would say "mom look its my self expression, I want a 14g because it is the size that fits ME, not because its cool, but because that is my choice can you please respect that choice it is my nose afterall."

Unless you have a cruel parent they should understand. though my mom was fairly militant about piercings and i gave her "perfect" pictures throughout school and when I graduated three months later I got it pierced. the cartilage thing isn't an issue I dont wear it all the time, just when i am in Walmart! Oh the looks you get from nazi-conservatives!

Yeah, but you should have seen the hell it took just to get her to let me have it pierced in the first place!Ahh, what a fun 7 months that was; threatening to pierce it myself, trying to get friends to do it for me, looking for someone who's parents would pose as my parents to give consent for me to get it done (she kinda busted me on that one though). She doesn't hate it so much now, but I guess I should remember that she is close to her 50's. But still, 1 gauge isn't alot.
Haha, I'm sure you get even wierder looks from old people. XD
